| Lindy Hop Dictionary ("Lindypedia") Let's add a bunch of terms here. No need to give exhaustive details on each, but you're encouraged to link to sites with lots of detail :). Please keep stuff alphabetical if possible (just move things around as needed). Thanks!
- Aerials: A move that results in one of the dancers leaving the ground for an extended period of time.
- Charleston: [description of move, dance form]
- Frankie Manning: (brief note + link to appropriate site(s) here)
- Jack and Jill competition: A contest form in which entrants are randomly paired up with a partner they may or may not know or have even danced with before. Typically, three or more song segments are played, and typically a set of judges rank the participants at the end. These competitions range from relatively traditional to wacky (e.g., MC calling out goofy moves, asking partners to switch lead and follow roles, etc.).
- Lindy Crush: An often-temporary infatuation with someone you have danced with in response to your 'love' of their dancing, because you find them cute or charming, or a combination thereof. e.g., "Oh my God, I have such a lindy crush on that girl I met at STBLX! [St. Louis Blues Exchange]." Lindy crushes are generally taken in the spirit of fun, with folks often publicly proclaiming LCs on non-single or otherwise "non-eligible" fellow dancers.
- Lindy Exchange: Originally conceived as a weekend where Chicago dancers would descend upon San Francisco to hang out with Lindy Hoppers there, the idea expanded to encompass much larger scale events hosted by individual cities inviting everyone in the world to come dance at an organized set of events for a weekend. For more details and a comprehensive calendar, see www.lindyexchange.com.
- Lindy turn: British term for Swing out.
- Social dancing: Partner dancing with another person, typically with new partners every song or two, just for fun. Lindy Hop tends to emphasize social dancing more than many ballroom dances and de-emphasizes the concept of having a single dance partner.
- Savoy Ballroom:
- Swing out: The "signature" lindyhop move. Begins in open position, transitions to closed position by count 4, returning to original open position by count 8. Leader rotates 360 degrees, clockwise, over the course of the move. Follower passes on leaders right side coming in; continues back out on other side. Standard footwork is: step-step-triplestep-step-step-triple step. Infinite variations of this popular move are possible including overrotating, under rotation, changing the shape of the path, footwork variations, slowing or speeding up rotation at various points, reversing the entire direction, adding turns during first or second half, adding improvisation in middle, or varying the look and feel with styling or posture shifts. A swingout can also be performed from closed position [Svenn]
- Wiggly Hop: A derisive description of the actions of a dancer or type of dancer who engages in movement wholly unconnected with his or her partner... e.g., hip flourishes that aren't even remotely led.
