Feedback on this site

Hey... you can easily edit this page. Yes, you! -- Edit it now or learn more.

Feedback, either private or public, is very, very welcomed!

Please add your thoughts within this page (inline, perhaps indented with the option), or via the comments option below.  Thanks!

Contributions

  • Is it easy or confusing to contribute at present?
  • Should I encourage registrations, so people will be notified of changes, or is encouraging registrations just introducing an additional hump?
  • How can we best separate out facts from opinions, or better yet, integrate them in a way that's smart and non-controversial? (e.g., indicating "I really love this store!" or "Actually, I respectfully disagree with that idea about not asking someone for more than 3 dances in a night...").  Perhaps putting commentary / opinions in italics?  And always adding one's name or nickname in brackets like this? [Adam Lasnik]

How's it feel?

  • A friend commented that this site looks kinda stiff / sterile.  I agree.  It's 'cause I used a default "business-type" template to have stuff clean to start.  But how can I make it fun without making it obnoxious / cluttered / etc.?  Maybe some fun graphics, logos, a different font, different colors...?

Permissions

  • Who should be allowed to edit most pages?
  • Is there a huge risk of abuse?  How should that be handled?
  • If only registered users should be able to post stuff, who should be able to register, and should it be via automatic process or manual process?

The big picture

  • Should this site simply aggregate links to content elsewhere?  Host original content?
  • What should the goals be of this site?  What sections are likely to be the most used?  Most valuable?

Misc

  • Should comments be enabled or disabled? (do they detract from in-page editing?) Should they perhaps even replace in-page editing sometimes?
  • Should I have external links open in a new window so people are easily able to come back to this site?
  • Is the advertising intrusive?  Invisible?  Relevant? UPDATE:  I got one complaint, and removed the ads, but expect to put them back in a month or two.  What are your thoughts about this?
  • Is it easy to find stuff, search for stuff?
  • Is it daunting to edit a page?  Create links?
  • Anything else? :)

My humble oppinion of the future of this great site is this:

  • First of all I picture this site to become a good reference point if you're seeking any information concerning Lindy Hop. Whether that be teachers, camps or places to go dancing socially.
This implies that the site become a gateway to resources on the internet, but I don't see any problems with posting original material too, e.g. blogs, reoprts from camps.
  • On the design aspect: The site should be kept "clean". By that I mean no  unnecessary/glaring graphics, adds or breathtaking colours. I don't have a problem with adds as long as they are not the focus of the site. The style can become warmer but in a tasteful sort of way.
External links should definitely open in a new window to make it easier to use this site as a reference site.
  • There's no need for registration. Sure it's a cool thing, but it will also, IMO, hamper the evolution of the site. Some people can be a bit apprehensive when it comes to registrating on web sites.
  • Everyone should be able to edit pages if they want. If there are incidents of abuse, people will clean it up soon enough. If all else fails it isn't hard to roll-back to an older verion of that page.
  • Comments are a good thing, but there could be a limit on how many comments are shown on each page (Is five a good number?), with the possibility to read all comments if one wants to.

I think this site could use a section that covers the most important part of Lindy Hop:  "how to do it".

It would be nice to have a "Moves" section that has 5-10 categories of moves and in each category persons could add descriptions and "pet names" of lindy hop moves and combinations.

Some "move categories" could be "charleston", "the basic", "foot styling", "turns", "arm moves", "dips", "tricks", "movement", etc.

I am wondering if there is going to be a listing for other dance events that are not camps.  Something like the Boston Tea Party or the Rhythmic Arts Festival.  Should exchanges have a seperate area?  Something to consider.....
